Word manuscript in. Store-ready EPUB out.
SK eBook Studio is a desktop app for genre fiction authors on Mac, Windows and Linux. Import your .docx, pick a look, export for Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo and Nook. Your manuscript stays on your computer.
Private beta. Exports are limited to the first 3 chapters and watermarked.
The Lantern Road
Mara had walked the Lantern Road for nine days before she admitted it was not on any map.
“You’re lost,” said the crow on the milestone. “Everyone is, at first.”
She laughed, because the alternative was crying, and kept walking toward the light.
The road bent, as roads do, around a hedge that had been trimmed into the shape of a door. Someone had painted the handle gold.
Behind her, the lamps she had passed went out one by one, as if somebody were counting.
The same chapter in each of the ten built-in styles. Fonts, chapter opening and drop cap all change together.
Four clicks: import, style, export, confirm
Here is a whole book going through the app. It takes under a minute.
Imports the Word file you already have
Finds chapters, title and author, then lets you split, merge and reorder. Real footnotes and inline pictures carry over.
Ten genre looks
Epic Fantasy, Modern Thriller, Romance, Horror, Crime Noir, Regency and more. Drop cap, scene-break flourish, indent and alignment are adjustable.
Built for the weird stuff
Text-message threads, letters, LitRPG stat cards, poetry and branching choices are real EPUB text that reflows on every device.
Exports for each store
Universal, Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo and Nook, or all five at once. Every export runs a pre-flight check for packaging, navigation, metadata, fonts, footnotes and broken choice links.
Preview that matches the file
The preview is built from the same markup and stylesheet as the export, with Kindle, tablet and phone views and Day, Sepia and Night themes.
Heading Studio
Chapter headings with numbering, subtitles, POV tags and ornaments, set for the whole book or per chapter.
Get the beta
Pick your system. Testing takes about 30 minutes for the core run; more is welcome.
Installing. The beta isn’t code-signed yet, so your system will warn you. That is expected.
Mac: open the .dmg and drag the app to Applications. If it won’t open, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. If macOS says the app is “damaged”, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/SK eBook Studio.app" in Terminal.
Windows: if SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
Linux: make the .AppImage executable (right-click, Properties, Allow executing, or chmod +x on the file), then double-click it.
What the beta limits. Exports contain the first 3 chapters of your book, a beta notice page at the front and a small watermark line at the end of each chapter. The whole book stays open in the app for editing and preview. Use a copy of your manuscript and keep the original safe.
__OFFER__
The app is unsigned, so Mac and Windows will show a warning. Here is how to open it.
Mac:
- Open the downloaded .dmg and drag SK eBook Studio into Applications.
- Open it from Applications. macOS will say it can’t verify the app. Click Done.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the message about SK eBook Studio and click Open Anyway.
Windows:
- Run the installer. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, click More info.
- Click Run anyway.
The warnings appear because the beta isn’t code-signed yet. Signing comes before the public release.
Guides for testers

SK eBook Studio: Beta Testing Guide
Thank you for testing. SK turns a manuscript into a polished EPUB 3 ebook (ebooks only, no print or PDF). It works offline and your manuscript never leaves your computer.
Time needed: about 30 minutes for the core test. More is welcome.
Before you start
- Use a copy of your manuscript. Keep the original safe.
- Have a real manuscript if you can (.docx is best). If not, use the built-in sample: project menu, Reset to Sample Story.
- Note your version: click BETA in the header, then Copy diagnostic info. Paste it into every report.
Core test (everyone)
- Import your .docx. Did it find your chapters, title and author? Anything wrong, missing or extra?
- Edit a chapter in Edit Mode: bold, italic, a scene break, a footnote. Try Undo.
- Style the book: change genre preset and fonts. Does the preview follow?
- Save (Save As to a new
.skbook), close the app, reopen the file by double-clicking it. Is everything there? - Export for the store you use (Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Nook or Universal). Read the pre-flight results. Do they make sense?
- Open the EPUB on a real device or reader app and compare it with the in-app preview. This is the most valuable test. Note device and app.
Platform-specific
Mac: edit something, quit from the Dock (right-click, Quit) and reopen. Is your work there when you reopen? Did the app ask anything on the way out?
Windows: Save As to a folder with spaces in its name; double-click a .skbook from Explorer.
Linux: Save As to a name without .skbook. Does it add the extension and warn before replacing an existing file?
Kobo / Nook users: export for that store and test on the device. Check fonts, chapter list and images.
Kindle users: use the Kindle channel, send by Send to Kindle, email or wifi, and check the fonts.
Please try to break it
Huge files, odd characters, images, footnotes, very long chapter titles, pasting from Word, quitting mid-edit.
Reporting
Use the report form further down this page. A screenshot plus the diagnostic info is gold. If it is safe to share, attach the .skbook (or a trimmed copy). Do not send a manuscript you want to keep private.
What we are not looking for
Print layout, PDF, Word export, cover design and custom CSS are intentionally not in SK.
Prepare your Word file A few minutes in Word gives a much better import.
Preparing your Word file for import
No importer is perfect. The better the .docx is prepared, the better the import. A few minutes in Word saves much more time in SK.
Do
- Use Heading styles for chapters. Apply Word's Heading 1 to every chapter title. This is the single most reliable signal.
- Use real scene-break markers, or a consistent line such as
***or#, not a row of blank lines. - Put the title and author on the first page as plain lines (or use the Title style).
- Use real footnotes (References, Insert Footnote) rather than typing numbers by hand.
- Insert pictures inline and set alt text if you can. A lone picture at the very start is used as the cover.
- Use page breaks only between chapters.
- Keep front and back matter labelled with clear headings such as Copyright, Dedication, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Also By.
- Accept all tracked changes and delete comments before importing.
Avoid
- Chapter titles made only by making text big, bold or centred, with no heading style.
- Manual line breaks (Shift+Enter) inside a paragraph to fake spacing.
- Tabs or spaces for indents. Let SK handle indentation.
- Text boxes, columns and tables used for layout. They do not carry over.
- Drop caps made with Word's drop-cap tool or a table.
- Headers, footers and page numbers. They are dropped, which is correct for an ebook.
What SK leaves behind
Word formatting such as fonts, sizes, colours and spacing is dropped on purpose, because the ebook takes its look from the genre preset you pick. Parts are not detected automatically; add them in SK.
After importing
Open the import review, scan the chapter list for missing or extra chapters, and fix them with Split and Merge before you style anything.
Tell us what happened
Found a bug or something confusing? Fill this in. A screenshot plus the diagnostic info helps most: in the app, click BETA in the header, then Copy diagnostic info.
Know another author who’d test?
We’re looking for 3 to 4 indie authors, especially Windows and Linux users and anyone who reads on a Kobo or Nook. Send them this page.
What it won’t do
No print or PDF
SK makes ebooks only. Print layout, PDF and Word export are intentionally not included.
No cloud, no account
It works offline. Your manuscript never leaves your computer.
No writing tools
It formats a finished manuscript. It doesn’t replace Word or Scrivener, and cover design and custom CSS aren’t included.
Import is the area most likely to need your eyes: check back matter, front matter titles, Part headings, and title and author detection.
